Ook maar eentje van die andere aanwinst dan. Grant Green, de Grote Groene, was de eerste jazz gitarist waar ik ooit naar luisterde, en misschien heeft hij daarom altijd wel een streepje voor, maar Kenny Burrell is minstens net zo goed.
Midnight Blue had met hetzelfde gemak Midnight Blues kunnen heten want het is net zo goed een jazzy blues album als een bluesy jazz album.
De liner notes, wederom van Leonard Feather, openen met een quote van Duke Ellington:
the blues ain’t nothin’ but a cold gray day, and all night long it stays that way…the blues is a one-way ticket from your love to nowhere; the blues ain’t nothin’ but a black crepe veil, ready to wear.
Soul Lament is Kenny Burrell solo, niets meer dan een man en zijn gitaar. Mooier wordt het niet.
I Always Have A Song Inside My Head 
Kenny Burrell doesn’t only has this bluesy feeling, he also plays on the the semi-acoustic such Bebop-inspired phrasing as Charlie Christian was able to modify. „Midnight Blue“ is probably one of the coolest records in the Blue-Note repertoire.
