10.000 songs can’t be wrong

Day 108 - The Cardigans - Do You Believe

I never knew The Cardigans. I always thought they were the same band as The Corrs or The Cranberries. Only spelled different. But lately I read the novel Buzz Aldrin, hvor ble det av deg i alt mylderet? (thats the original title, I read it in Dutch), writen by the Norwegian author Johan Harstad, and The Cardigans and their music are all over the book. So I started listening, and I realy like what I hear.

Day 107 - Gloria Gaynor - I Will Survive

Day 7 and the last day of the “songs that suck” theme week. It sounds easy, selecting seven “songs that suck”, ’cause there’s far more music that sucks then there is music worth to mention. But selecting music that realy sucks was harder then I thought. Most music that sucks I don’t hear at all. Or occasionally once or twice. These seven tracks realy sucks ’cause I heard them more then once or twice.

I Will Survive is a real classic disco tune. Such a tune everybody cheers about when the dj plays it at a party. Not me. I Will Survive realy sucks. When this tune pops up at a party its time to get another beer at the bar. Or better: loose another beer at the toilet. And let’s hope they don’t have speakers over there.

Day 106 - Eric Clapton - Layla (Unplugged)

Part 6 of the “songs that suck” theme week.

Without no doubt Eric Calpton can play guitar. And write some nice tunes. The problem here is called “unplugged”. Instead of a good rock song with a classic guitar riff, Clapton plays it like its a dull ballad, bending his wooden guitar with nylon strings. That realy sucks!

Day 105 - The Beatles - When I’m Sixty-Four

Day 5 of the “Songs that suck” theme week.

A song by one of the most overrated bands in the world, from one of the most overrated albums in the world. When I’m Sixty-Four. From Sgt. Pepper’s Lonely Hearts Club Band. By The Beatles. The whole album sucks, but this song realy sucks. It’s all happy and lovely and sweet. It’s so Paul McCartney. It’s so boring.

Day 104 - Ludwig van Beethoven - Zwölf Variationen über ‘See the conqu’ring hero comes’ aus Händels Oratorium ‘Judas Maccabaeus’

“Songs that suck” theme week, day 4.

Beethoven sucks too. Not all of his works off course, he wrote some fine music. But he also wrote a piece that realy sucks. Or maybe it was Händel that wrote a piece that realy sucks. I only know the variations Beethoven wrote on a theme by Händel. And it realy sucks

Day 103 - Simon & Garfunkel - El Condor Pasa (If I Could)

“Songs that suck” theme week, day 3.

Bridge over Troubled Water by Simon & Garfunkel is realy a great album. After almost 40 years this album is still enjoyable. Except for one song. One song that wasn’t enjoyable even when the record came out. The one song that realy sucks. El Condor Pasa (If I Could). It sounds like BZN or those Peruvian street musicians you sometimes see (the so called “panfluit maffia”). Or even worse: BZN and the pan flute maffia collaborating. Thank god for the cd burner. I ripped my Bridge over Troubled Water and burned a new copy with one song less. A great album became even greater.

Day 102 - R.E.M. - Shiny Happy People

I’m doing a “songs that suck” theme week, this is day two.

If you ask me, R.E.M. never made any good record after Document. With Green came their breakthrough. Clubs became stadiums and Michael Stipe was no longer a eccentric guy but turned into a more normal rock star. Then came Losing My Religion, and suddenly everybody was singing and whisteling R.E.M.
The whole album Out of Time was brave, but what realy sucked was that song with her from the B-52’s. Wikipedia discribes this album, and even this song, as Alternative Rock. It ain’t. It’s music for the masses from a “used to be” alternative band.

Day 101 - Manic Street Preachers - Your Love Alone Is Not Enough

Max did a “Songs I hate” theme week recently. Well, hate is a big word but there are certainly “songs that suck”. Lets hear some of them.

I kick off with Your Love Alone Is Not Enough by the Manic Street Preachers. I love this band, but this song from their latest album Send Away the Tigers realy sucks. Not because Nina Persson sings along, not because the clip, not because being one of the singles from the album. It’s just this stupid refrain: “Its noddienuff, noddienuff, noddienuff”. Believe me, it’s more then enough!

Day 100 - Underworld - Two Months Off

A hundred days off, with this project. Took me four months. Hundred and twenty days. So 10.000 songs will last 12.000 days. That’s 32.8767 years. Make that 33 years. Finishing this project in 2041. I’m 71 years old by then. But first: do a rain dance along with Karl Hyde.
