Day 116 - Living Colour - Open Letter (To A Landlord)

Nice rock song with a message. This should be played loud in the Alkmaar town house, the people there are making plans to demolishing everything.
Day 111 - Saybia - The Second You Sleep

I’m listening a lot to Saybia lately. Often compared with Coldplay but a lot better, of course. (Coldplay realy sucks)
Day 108 - The Cardigans - Do You Believe

I never knew The Cardigans. I always thought they were the same band as The Corrs or The Cranberries. Only spelled different. But lately I read the novel Buzz Aldrin, hvor ble det av deg i alt mylderet? (thats the original title, I read it in Dutch), writen by the Norwegian author Johan Harstad, and The Cardigans and their music are all over the book. So I started listening, and I realy like what I hear.
Day 102 - R.E.M. - Shiny Happy People

I’m doing a “songs that suck” theme week, this is day two.
If you ask me, R.E.M. never made any good record after Document. With Green came their breakthrough. Clubs became stadiums and Michael Stipe was no longer a eccentric guy but turned into a more normal rock star. Then came Losing My Religion, and suddenly everybody was singing and whisteling R.E.M.
The whole album Out of Time was brave, but what realy sucked was that song with her from the B-52’s. Wikipedia discribes this album, and even this song, as Alternative Rock. It ain’t. It’s music for the masses from a “used to be” alternative band.
Day 101 - Manic Street Preachers - Your Love Alone Is Not Enough

Max did a “Songs I hate” theme week recently. Well, hate is a big word but there are certainly “songs that suck”. Lets hear some of them.
I kick off with Your Love Alone Is Not Enough by the Manic Street Preachers. I love this band, but this song from their latest album Send Away the Tigers realy sucks. Not because Nina Persson sings along, not because the clip, not because being one of the singles from the album. It’s just this stupid refrain: “Its noddienuff, noddienuff, noddienuff”. Believe me, it’s more then enough!
Day 89 - Bob Dylan & The Band - You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere

Yesterday, Evergreen was the suport act for the My Morning Jacket show in De Melkweg, Amsterdam. After a few songs Jim James and guitarist Carl Broemel joined Evergreen to play a stunning version of You Ain’t Goin’ Nowhere. So that will be the song of the day. Whoo-ee! Ride me high.

Day 84 - Manic Street Preachers - You Love Us

There’s two versions of You Love Us. The first version, the Heavenly version, is from 1991 and was their last single for Heavenly Records. This version of the song ends with a coda which includes a drum sample from Iggy Pop’s “Lust For Life”.
The other version is a rerecording for their Sony record debut album Generation Terrorists, this version is much heavier. The album version got a minute long guitar solo ending.

Day 82 - Dog Eat Dog - Games

Since a few days I got me a Wii, so its all about games here. Which reminds me of that song by Dog Eat Dog. I had this album but sold it a few years ago because I was bored with it. Still sounds dated to me. But even Amazon sells this album only second hand, despite the fact that Dog Eat Dog still exist.
Day 73 - Frank Zappa - Stevie’s Spanking

Frank Zappa in his own words (in: The Real Frank Zappa Book):
In 1981, on one of Steve Vai’s early tours, we were playing at Notre Dame University, and Laurel fishman showed up. By some twist of fate, Steve wound up with Laurel in his motel room. They engaged in a variety of practices involving a hairbrush, and Steve drooling on his own dork while she jerked him off. (I got the whole catalogue of events the next morning during ‘Breakfast Report.’)

Day 72 - Frank Zappa - Return of the Son of Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar

Not long after listening to Steve Vai’s Flex-Able I discovered that Vai played in the band of Frank Zappa. So I bought a Frank Zappa record. I started with Guitar, an album full of guitar solo’s by Frank Zappa. And what a great guitarist he is! Return of the Son of Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar is a solo from 1979, before Steve Vai would join Frank Zappa. Zappa hired Vai to transcripe a lot of the solo’s on Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar, these transcriptions were published in 1982 in The Frank Zappa Guitar Book. Return of the Son of Shut Up ‘n Play Yer Guitar isn’t part of these transcriptions.
