10.000 songs can’t be wrong

Day 87 - Iron Maiden – Rime of the Ancient Mariner

Not only is Steve Harris one the best bass players in the world, he also is a very good songwriter, finding his inspiration in movies, books or even poetry. Like this song where he used an 18th century poem by Samuel Taylor Coleridge. Thanks to Iron Maiden is this the only English poem I can recite, at least a bit.

One after one, by the star-dogged moon,
Too quick for groan or sigh,
Each turned his face with a ghastly pang,
And cursed me with his eye.

Four times fifty living men
(and I heard nor sigh nor groan),
With heavy thump, a lifeless lump,
They dropped down one by one.

This song can also be found on my desert island album. Then down in falls comes the rain.

Day 77 - Iron Maiden - Revelations

If there is any album I would take with me to a desert island it would be Iron Maiden’s Live After Death. Would be cool to shout at the seagulls “Scream for me Long Beach”. Revelations is originaly from the Piece Of Mind album.

Day 37 - Soilwork - Departure plan

Melodic death metal. Sounds like a contradiction but it works. If Soilwork put some shocking visual extra’s in their music, they would be just as big as Rammstein. Maybe even bigger. But Soilwork doesn’t. It’s just the music. No image, no imago, no video.

Day 5 - My Dying Bride - Two Winters Only

My Dying Bride - The Angel and the Dark River

Classic doom by the British My Dying Bride. The Angel and the Dark River is their best album and I could easily pick all six songs of the album and place them in my list of 10.000 songs. But I choose the baladesque Two Winters Only. It’s haunting, it’s depressed, it’s beautiful.
