10.000 songs can’t be wrong

Day 31 - Sex Pistols - God Save the Queen

It’s Queensday in Holland, so let’s celebrate!

God save the queen,
She ain’t no human being.
There is no future,
In Holland’s dreaming.

Day 30 - Neil Young & Crazy Horse - Cortez the Killer

Cortez the Killer is the best song Neil Young had ever written. Droning guitar solo, wonderfull lyrics, like waves breaking on the beach. Not only Cortez was a killer, this song also is. And Neil Young himself of course.

Day 29 - Lohues & The Louisiana Blues Club - Boggel in’t rad

Hoogste tied veur de blues. Dutch blues. All the way from Erica, Drenthe. Daniel Lohues, former member of Dutch band Skik, made two blues records. The first one Ja, Boeh in 2003 was recorded in Louisiana with local musicians. The second album Grip was recorded in 2005. Both very strong albums, sung in Drents. Boggel in’t rad (I’ve got a crooked wheel) is from Grip.

Day 28 - Lonnie “the Cat” - I ain’t drunk

A song from the Theme Time Radio Hour With Your Host Bob Dylan album. Originaly aired in show #3: “Drink”.
No idea who Lonnie “the Cat” is, or was. The cd booklet of TTRH says I ain’t drunk is an outtake from a 1980 album. Google learns me it is recorded in 1954 by Lonnie “the Cat” with the Bobby Hines band including Ike Turner on piano.
Great lyrics here:

I don’t care what the people are thinking
I ain’t drunk, I’m just drinking

Albert Collins plays a fine cover of this song, but Lonnie “the Cat” has more high notes in his singing (almost screaming like a cat), more madness.

Day 27 - Billy Idol - Rebel Yell

I realy liked Billy Idol back in the early eigthies, and I still can hear what I liked about it then. The raw energy. But older and wiser I also hear now that this was actualy designer energy.

Day 26 - Grace Jones - Victor Should Have Been A Jazz Musician

Always when I hear this song it reminds me of my uncle Victor. He was a small guy, grey hair, moustache. Working nine to five at some office, typing letters or doing some other unimportant job. But in 1986 Grace Jones was singing that he, my uncle Victor, was a jazz musician. Unbelieveable! Who would have thought that?

Day 25 - Bob Dylan - Blood In My eyes

The last day of the Bob Dylan week. I started with the nineties and I end with the nineties. Although I could say I end in the thirties. Blood In My Eyes is from the 1993 album World Gone Wrong, an album full with old folk and blues tunes. The song was originaly recorderd by the Mississippi Sheiks in the ’30s (as was the title song, World Gone Wrong).
Realy like the videoclip that comes with this song, the grainy black and white goes so well with the acoustic guitar.

Day 24 - Bob Dylan - Everything Is Broken

Bob Dylan week, day 6. The other song from the eighties comes from the 1989 album Oh, Mercy. Strong album, with strong songs. My choice is Everything Is Broken.

“Danny [producer Daniel Lanois] didn’t have to swamp it up too much, it was already swamped up pretty good when it came to him. Critics usually didn’t like a song like this coming out of me because it didn’t seem to be autobiographical. Maybe not, but the stuff I write does come from an autobiographical place.”

Day 23 - Bob Dylan - In The Summertime

The fifth day of the Bob Dylan week. Today and tomorrow songs from Dylan in the eigthies. I start with a song from the 1981 album Shot Of Love. In The Summertime can be seen as a gospel, but to me it sounds more like a lovesong. Lovely harmonica!

Day 22 - Bob Dylan - Hurricane

Bob Dylan week, day 4. Desire is my all-time favorite Dylan album. Hard to pick only one song from this album. There’s Isis, Sara, One More Cup of Coffee and Oh, Sister. But I choose Hurricane. A protestsong about the imprisonment of Rubin “Hurricane” Carter. Almost sounds like a movie.
